Space overview
A community-built, volunteer-run library and multipurpose space in an unnamed alley in Fitzroy.
The Library Portal is home to 8000+ books, walling a calm interior of mid-century furniture, soft lamps and lighting, and an eclectic range of instruments. The interior thus makes for an aesthetically-pleasing mise en scene for film and photo. The space is typically used for the public to come in and read, for a range of workshops (from reading clubs to life drawing), as well as for music performances (live and DJ- using CDJs and a turntable with a sound system/mixer) and film screenings (we have a roll-down screen and projector). The interior is often changing, so moving things around for your needs is no issue. Uses of our space so far have included: reading groups, lectures, workshops, community meetings, chess club, musical performances, recording sessions, market stalls, and as a set for short films. We are friendly, flexible and want to work with creatives to achieve their goals. If you have a concept and would like to workshop it with us, please reach out.
The Library Portal is located off Westgarth Street in Fitzroy, less than a 5 minute walk from the 96 tram route and 546 bus route. Parking is also available in nearby streets. It is located off Nicholson St, and close to Brunswick St- so a plethora of food, coffee and drink options are nearby too.
