Space overview
Coates Community Arts is an independent community arts space in the Coates Building at 20 Collins Street. You can find us in Suite 6 on the fourth floor, in the former office of the Federation of Chinese Associations.
The space is utilised for one-off and regular events such as life drawing, photography, workshops, book launches, pop-up retail, dance and theatre. It is a clean commercial space with white walls, an original timber veneer wall, retro counter and bench seat, and large industrial windows. Coates Community Arts has a storeroom, kitchenette, and two lockable artist studios. The studios are available separately for hire. The space is fitted with both fluorescent and track lighting, ceiling fans, and an in-built sound system suitable for background music. We also supply 30 fold-out chairs, 4 trestle tables, glassware, and POS hardware for events.
We're located in the city centre at the top end of Collins Street, directly opposite the Sofitel Hotel, and close to Parliament House. The Coates Building was built in the late 1950s and is a Post-War Modernist commercial building. Many of the current tenants are medical practitioners. We are the first and only arts space in the building.
