YURIYAL ERIC BRIDGEMAN | Yal
Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation. This exhibition presents a selection of photographic work and large painted shields created with members of the artist's Yuri tribe of Simbu Province, and his diasporic family in the Waghi Valley of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Yuriyal (meaning: Man of Yuri), has produced photographic portraits collaboratively with his family and those closest to him, in traditional and domestic settings, to form personal tributes through intimate and meaningful exchanges within men's spaces, the artist's studio, the rugby field and the hausman [a traditional Papua New Guinean men's house].
The works in this exhibition explore social and cultural expectations and traditions relating to masculinity. Haus Yuriyal have built their practice around things that are significant to them as men; tradition and custom, contemporary stories, ceremony, the presentation of bilas [worn adornments], tribal fighting and games of rugby.
This exhibition is presented as part of PHOTO2022.
