unS E L F
unSELF refers to the dissolution of the sense of self that exists as an illusory construct of thought within the body. This pervasive tendency is exacerbated in the digital age by the personification of selfie culture.
This series of installations explore the perception of separateness between self and other, mind and matter. The breakdown of these concepts being necessary to experience embodied conscious awareness. A wide range of material is used that’s recognisable within the constructed environment from the utilitarian to creative, with hard and soft, natural and artificial qualities. There’s an inversion of markers commonly used to designate and prohibit the occupation of space.
The compositions confinement are a means to physically interpret and examine the transition from the narrow insular self to the expansive, interconnected non-self. This immersive experience is articulated through geometric forms, materiality, contrast in colour and tone with an interplay of light and shadow. Transparent containment of the scenes play with the idea of the selfie construct, inviting and denying viewer presence.
These elements combine to illustrate the shifting and mysterious qualities of consciousness.
