Woven Memories
About
Mary Burgess of Woven Memories is a textile artist, working primarily as a hand weaver. She has a long standing interest in using fabric and yarn retrieved from rubbish bins, tips and the floors of fashion designers to create something new. Ideas of ritual wrapping and protecting of the body with cloth in various incarnations are often her starting point. Her creative directions have been strongly influenced by working with ‘La Trame de Soi’, a network of textile artists in Lyon, France and explorations of her own grief through weaving, primarily with her partner’s clothes after his death in 2008. In her Woven Memories practice commenced in 2014 she works with family members to re-purpose precious family clothes through hand weaving to create heirloom pieces for the future.
