Zan Wimberley is a Melbourne based photographer and artist. Zan trained in Scientific Photography at RMIT before moving to Sydney, to work under Cinematographers on major feature films within Australia, including Baz Luhrmann's 'Australia' and for Don McAlpine on 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'.

In 2008 Zan started working with artists and galleries as a documentation photographer, with performance, install, portraiture and the creation of works for artists. She is now considered one of the preeminent Art Documentation photographers in Australia. Zan graduated with a Masters at Sydney College of the Arts in 2013 and has since been working on her own art practice, and has had solo exhibitions at Firstdraft and Artereal gallery in Sydney, and has an upcoming solo show at Fort Delta in Melbourne.

Zan works across photography, video and sculpture to explore ideas surrounding nihilism and mortality in a post-internet, twenty-first century context. By creating artworks which negotiate the space between the heavy and almost incomprehensible reality of death and the absurd or macabre nature with which it is often met in contemporary society, Zan’s work offers a thoughtful and poetic series of ruminations on the human condition. Her work can be found in numerous private collections throughout Australia.

What attracted you to the space and what makes your studio suitable for your practice?

The studio will be used for both sides of my practice, with the beautiful soft light from the window, it'll be a place to do small scale shoots and have space to spread out and make my work.

I'll also use the studio as a space to work on my post production, admin, research and applications. Downstairs, the cafe and sitting area is a great place to socialise and meet the other occupants of Boyd School, and the library is a blessing - I love stumbling across different reading material and resources that I may not have otherwise come across.

Lastly, the central location is perfect, as it makes access to cultural events and openings that much easier to attend, as it's all within a stone's throw.
